VIZHINJAM  PORT  PROJECT

 
+ Advantages of Vizhinjam
 
  The proposed deepwater container tran port is located about 16 km south of capital city of Thiruvananthapuram and 60 km north of Cape Comorin at latitude 800 21’ North and longitude 770 0’ East on the west coast of India. This location offers the following unique advantages:
• Availability of 20 m contour within a nautical mile off the coast
• Minimal littoral drift along the coast and therefore hardly any maintenance dredging
• International shipping route connecting Persian gulf, Far-east and Australia is very close (about 10 nautical miles) to Vizhinjam.
• Proximity to national/regional road and railway network
• Nestled in the tip of Thiruvananthapuram, the city has an International Airport, skilled manpower and social infrastructure
• Rapid Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) revealed that there are no significant environmental or social issues.
 
+ Project development
 
 

Government has accorded top priority to develop a deepwater port at Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram to cater to the growing container transshipment demand of the country and the region. The project structured in public-private partnership (PPP) format is envisaged in three phases. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs.5480 crores, out of which Phase I development cost is Rs. 2,390 crores.

VISL has been nominated as the nodal agency for the selection of private developer and to oversee the implementation of the port project.
