Government has set up the company Vizhinjam
International Seaport Limited (VISL) mainly to
provide external support infrastructure (road / rail
connectivity, water and power supply to the port,
facilitating the establishment of port-based
development activities, warehousing zones, apart
from overseeing the implementation of the port
project by the private developer. The following are
the steps taken by Government of Kerala.

Road Rail connectivity |
VISL
has entrusted M/s. RITES, a Govt. of India agency
to carry out feasibility study for Road/Rail
connectivity to the port.

(b)
Water Supply |
The
port requires water for supply to ships, port staff
& users, pollution control, fire fighting etc.
Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has prepared the
project report on a water supply scheme of 3 mld capicty to the port with Vellayani
lake as the source. An agreement was signed with KWA
to implement the water supply scheme. KWA is taking
steps to tender the work.

(c)
Power Supply |
Power
supply at the port is required for operating
equipments like quay cranes at the berths, cargo
transfer system from berth to stack yard / plant,
backup area equipment, lighting of the port etc. The
estimated power requirement for the short term and
long term operations of the port are respectively 35
MW and 75 MW. In this regard,
discussions with relevant government agencies are
underway.

(d)
Other development activities |
Government also propose to take up a suitable port
based development activities, which would generate
substantial employment activities and provide for
economic development of the nearby areas. M/s. KITCO,
a Government Agency has been engaged to identify
pockets of vacant land that would require least
rehabilitation and resettlement and to propose
suitable development plans. Their study is in
progress.
